G350DT- is motor any good?

I have sorted out everything it is 1992 g350DT with 280.000km very clean no rust, it goes for 20k.
The only thing that i worry about is the motor. I owned w124 with 602 and had a lifter bore cracked and head was rebuilt. Does 350 having same problems ?

RE: G350DT- is motor any good?

It isn't a risk I would take personally, but it has been done. Thomas from Germany has one in a swb that has been updated. He claims it is a reliable engine after the revisions. I am not sure that any of the production models were very good. I think that the necessary updated cylinder head came a little later. The cooling system also requires an update. I have read a lot of horror stories about this engine as I once consider a similar truck. There are head issues, cooling system issues and I understand that there is an issue with cylinders becoming out of round. I have heard this attibuted to both the overheating problem and an inherent design flaw due to the longer stroke of the 3.5L version. The 3L version of the engine is seemingly more reliable.

RE: G350DT- is motor any good?

That G is not a G350DT. It is a 350 GD Turbodiesel. The distinction is vital, because the upgraded engine head only came with the 1994 MY, when the model's denomination changed from 350 GD Turbodiesel to G350 Turbodiesel. Many older G350DT have had their engines replaced by now and if the vendor can prove that this is the case, then I'd go for it. Otherwise, I'd stay clear.

Being a G350DT owner I can tell you if the motor goes it is $7000 to get it rebuilt.
If you do get this the first thing you better do is change the glow plugs, That has been identified as one of the issues resulting in engine failure.
Next switch to evans coolant, that takes care of the overheating issues.
Next make sure you keep an eye on your oil.
In a lot of the 350 failures they do not go overnight. It is over about a 10,000K time period. You will see oil levels drop.
If that is the case start saving.
20K is not a bad deal but remember that if the engine is going add another 10K
Also check the vacuum pump. They sometimes let go and little steal balls fall all inside the timing chain area, thus not good.

I love my 350, good power and sounds great.
If I can help please email me. I have been from blown to running with a 350.

Anyone using his 463 G seriously off-road would have their front bumper bent at least on one side!
