2002 G500 Bioethanol anyone?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have a 2002 G 500 that runs the 85% ethanol? I live in OR and have found the 85% blend is allot cheaper than the 10% and of course much cleaner. What is everybody's take on bio ethanol and if someone is running it what is your experience? Any advice is appreciated.

I wouldn't use it in that engine. It wasn't designed for it. At 85% (15% ethanol?), you're going to corrode the heck out of many parts of the fuel system and your engine will not run well.

US News & World Report did a cover story on the myths about and problems with alcohol as a fuel.

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articles/070204/12ethanol.htm

Some of the things that have been pointed out regarding ethanol as a fuel:

1.) Gallon for gallon ethanol contains less energy than gasoline, thereby you're going to use more for the same performance.
2.) There is more, yes more, air pollution from ethanol fuels than gasoline.
3.) It takes more energy to get ethanol to the pump than there is in the ethanol itself.
4.) Corn prices are rising dramatically with the shift to ethanol. Higher corn prices equals higher food (grain based breads, cereals, tortillas, beef, etc) prices.
PS - Ethanol works well in Brasil, because they produce more sugar than they can market.

Here are a couple of more related articles:

There are lots more available.

Re: 2002 G500 Bioethanol anyone?

Ethanol is perfect for a country like Brazil where they can grow sugar cane faster than they can harvest it. It is idiotic for the USA. Throw out all the gov't subsidies and nobody would be promoting the stuff here. Terribly inefficient fuel when factoring in the lower output vs. gasoline and the cost/energy/resources required to make it out of corn.

Your G500 might be OK running on it. There is somebody on another forum in Brazil w/ a 06 G500. For my truck - I would run it. I prefer 0% ethanol when I can find it.
