thats interesting guys! i thought my G started in 1st,but then again i have never counted the gear changes how about when in kick down mode? cos mine seems like it gets a good kick up the backside!
is that shove still from 2nd gear....?
mine does go through all the gears manualy though,its the first thing i tested when buying her

It will select 1st on it’s own if you are brutal when taking off from a standstill or if it is under load E.G. towing up hill or more extreme off road situations. I’m now content that it’s no big deal and can live with it. Off road descent’s I just lock it in 2nd and left foot brake.


Are you sure it will shift down to 1'st gear unless you lock it manually (all the way down and a bit left)? Unless your gearbox has been modified, it's supposed to start by default in 2'nd gear, no matter how hard you floor the acellerator unless locked in 1'st. 1'st gear is only worth a few meters before your rpm's are way up.


Yes it certainly changes down to 1st without me putting the selector in position 1. I can not physically get the lever in to position 1, there appears to be a mechanical block preventing this. However, as per previous post, I’ve decided that’s either how it’s meant to be or even if there is a fault I can live with it just fine.

My stock 300GD auto started in 1st always.  It was converted to a turbodiesel and still started in 1st.  It died, I replaced it with a 280GE auto which starts in 2nd.  If you floor it from a stop, it will kick-down into 1st and hold it to over 4000rpm.  This was accomplished by adjusting the kick-down linkage from the top of the engine to the arm on the right side of the tranny.  Works like a charm:boink: .

My 280GE starts from the second normally, but when you push the pedal from the very beginning to the floor (kickdown) it starts from the first. It also engages the first manually without any problem. Great ratio in the 1st (80:1)

I once heard it said that it was also intelligent enough to detect whether or not you were on a steep incline, in which case it would start in first as well. But nothing to proove or disproove this....

Hello Nugat

Please can you post a picture of the nylon spring loaded sleeve in the linkage? I suspect that I am missing a bracket against which this sleeve will "push" once you start selecting 1st gear. This linkage then is shortened. I have completely stripped and cleaned this linkage. On testing it looks as if there has to be mechanical pressure against this linkage to allow it to shorten. Over the weekend I will post a photo of my linkage. I am again adding the adjustment procedure. In teh picture there "appears" to be a bracket in the background.

first gear of the W4A018 is 4.007:1 - which is very good considering that most automatics have a 2.8:1 first gear
You get 77.41:1 ( 4.007 x 1.84 x 2.14 x 4.88) in first gear, low range with the automatic below stall speed (below 1500 rpm torque is increased by the factor 1.84)
Reverse has one of the greates ratios in low: 5.495 x 1.84 x 2.14 x 4.88 = 105:1

Since torque is not only the force that creates a good "kick in the pants" - it is also a force that breaks parts - the W4A starts normally in 2nd.

Please post the picture of the "nylon" part, I have no idea what it could be.

Hello Folks
This is the nylon part that I am talking about. I believe there should be a bracket of sorts that pushes against this nylon part to shorten the rod that will then allow first gear to be engaged.

That is the nylon part I have been told allows 1st gear selection. It does shorten / lengthen the linkage and is what I have sprayed copious amounts of ease it oil at. I will have a crawl under mine tomorrow to see if it looks the same as yours.

BusBar, I just checked and on mine there is a bracket to hold it...as you said. Here is how to adjust it.
By the way thanks for bringing this up...I found more linkages to grease/lubricate.
I will post photo in a bit.

Here is photo of bracket as requested...I have searched for part number and believe A 460 277 0040 may be the part but I am not completely sure as the description calls for "parking interlock linkage"...but it sure looks like it. Hope this helps.

Again, as I posted, I am not positive that is the part. I am only going from what the EPC shows as looking very similar. Hopefully if you order and it is wrong they will accept back. I think price was under 10 euro.
