shocks?

Hi,

What are the best all around shocks for a 460?... 95% street driving?

How hard are they to install myself?

Thx

RE: shocks?

I replaced mine with Bilsteins. Very easy installation procedure for the DYI types.

Check your pm's.

RE: shocks?

Replaced my Bilstiens(worn out) with Bilstiens....check out the www.clubgwagen.com for the excellent tech article by Hipine on removal and installation. Straightforward install and plan on about 2.5 hours.
A set should run about 475.00 or so.
A search for "shocks" on this forum will yield a couple of neverending threads or opinions and shock options.
For me they work fine and were quite an improvement over the original worn out ones.

RE: shocks?

Bilstein shocks make the ride on a 460 rougher than with OEM Sachs schocks (regular and heavy duty versions) and the prices should be similar.
Bilstein shocks for the 463 are of a different design and produce a nice ride

Harald,

My experience with the 280GE was that the Bilsteins produced a much smoother ride than the Sachs. Also, the gas pressurization of the Bilsteins helped a very tiny bit with aging (and sagging) springs.

RE: shocks?

Could it be that Bilstein has different shocks for the 460? I remember my set to be very harsh compared to the Sachs.

RE: shocks?

i have the koni raids on my 280 GEL and i i am very happy. my friend shakir has the normal koni's and to be honest on road and during our normal driving lifestyle the standard koni's do just fine!

i have bilstiens on my cab in cyprus and they seem to work ok but not as composed as konis.

i also made the mistake of fitting h/d non mercedes springs messed up the ride now i am saving up to get a set of orc springs

Shocks

Can the 463 shocks be used on a 460?

Does anyone know the part # for the shocks on the Canadian Military G's?

If there is around 60 - 70mm of spring lift is there a slightly longer shock that is recommended? I have the stock units on there with no issues concerning length that I can tell. They are not doing much absorbing anymore.

Front: A.005.323.42.00

Rear: A.004.326.04.00 or A.461.326.00.00, depending on the option code.

Wow that was fast. Thanks Dutch! I'm thinking they might be a good choice.

Cheers!

RE: shocks?

Me? I would generally go with OEM as I don’t have 1000’s of hours and $100K’s to test alternatives, trust the original engineers.
Unless the G is a “toy” or being modified for a specific purpose as is my 460 which has a 40mm lift and Monroes on it. It actually works great but it could have been a disaster!! (not really I just went with someone else’s knowledge and experience, thanks Roughneck)
Spring and damper rates are IMHO a mix of black magic (how do Peugeot get their cars to ride and handle so much better than Vauxhall/Opel/GM?), experience and lots of money on testing.

BTW what do people know about Gabriel Velocity Sensitive Technology dampers. My 463 has them on the rear and they just don’t feel “right”. A strange mix of harsh but bouncy
