Safari fuel tank

Does anyone have a picture of the safari tank mount, or a schematic of how the safari tank is placed on the main tank?
I have found a non-leaking main tank with safari hole and a loose safari tank, but I dont know what else I need. And how does it work? The safari unit must sit higher than the main tank right? Where does the air in the safari unit go? And how does the diesel get in?

"Safari" is a new term. Do you mean the optional saddle tanks that are located high up in the wheel wells?

Re: Safari fuel tank

G,,day cant give you drawings . my 460 has them both sides , they have a max capacity of 13 litres each (from memory) main tank fills through right tannk , when main tank is full ,left saddle tank and right saddle start to fill. they are slow to fill. when full the fuel cap dribbles if parked on slope.but they give an extra fuel range that i wouldnt be without . hope this is of help ,cheers kerry.

RE: Safari fuel tank

Hmmm.. I only have one available. I suspect that won't work as fluid wants to sit level...
Maybe I should solder the extra tank hole shut.

Saddle Tanks

The attached photos from the EPC don't really show it very well. The answer to your question about the air is best answered by the fact that there is a top vent in that extra saddle tank. It connects to a vent line that passes up and over the rear cargo door and connects to the system near the fuel filler neck. Because the vent line is small, it usually does not vent as fast as a fuel filler nozzle can deliver; so you sometimes have to wait for the saddle tank to vent in order to fill it completely. This is especially true for foaming diesel fuel.

One saddle tank was standard equipment on the W460 280GE. It was located between the fuel filler tube and the main tank.

This single saddle tank could be ordered as an option on all the other models, as could the second saddle tank.

RE: Saddle Tank(s)

I have them on my car!
I dismounted them to remove rust inside the mudguards, took some pictures, unfortunately no pictures when I had them out.
I cleaned them and covered them with Techtyl. Picture 2 shows the left tank removed, the hole is for the venting tube that runs upwards.
There should be a rubber ring in the hole for the tube.

The last picture shows the hose that connects one saddle tank.

Kerr, I'm getting 600-700 miles per 25 gallon tank on my ML320CDI. Gotta love it!
