gjvander Regular Date registered: Jul 2006 Location: Cincinnati, OH Vehicle(s): 2000 G500 Posts: 65 | Crank Position Sensor Just for reference, the crank position sensor did it's little thermal trick on my 2000 at ~84000 miles. From what I have read from other owners, I suspect if you plot the CPS reliability up it is a steep curve close to 100000 miles. Naturally the car started right up after the tow truck delivered it... $65 on eBay for the CPS. Just thought I would post so other owners know what to expect. Thanks to Dutch for the tip on using 1/4" E8 and universal joint to get to it. Regards, Geo | ||

My parent's C-class with V6 engine had the same issue around 60,000km. I wonder what Cam Shaft Position sensor will do next. Yasu | ||

I suspect it is low cycle thermal fatigue that causes the failure, so number of starts should be the indicator. But just a guess on my part. I will definitely have a spare CPS with me (along with required tools) when I go to more remote places. Regards, Geo | ||

And yes... just letting it sit for a while it'll start up so you have a few chances to note it before it outright fails. Luckily i checked it before the tow truck started doing anything, so i sent them home and drove it in. You can check it yourself with a hair dryer/hot air gun... blow on the sensor to heat it up with a cold engine... no start... let it cool... start... problem identified. I paid the dealer a stupid amount to have it fixed. both in parts and labor... but i needed it fixed that day. | ||
