300GD Sump removal

I now have the transmission out and was wondering if I can take the sump of the engine without lifting it ? Is there sufficient clearance to remove it. Do I have to take crank pully off?

You can remove the sump without taking off the crank pully. There is room to get it out although it helps to get the drag link out of the way. The very difficult part of the job is removing the dipstick tube and then reinstalling it when the sump is reinstalled. I used Hylomar to reseal it. No leaks.

Re: 300GD Sump removal

Did you use hylomar along the entire sump to crankcase interface or only arround dipstick tube?
I have also used hylomar in the past and find it difficult to spread it evenly, it tends to dry quickly and gets then its difficult to spread.

Re: 300GD Sump removal

Hylomar along the entire mating surface of the sump to the block. Don't panic about the drying, coat the surface as evenly as you can but don't use too much. I coated just the sump mating surface if I remember correctly. It doesn't take much because the surfaces are very precisely machined. Use the blue disposable gloves to match the hylomar; you are making a fashion statement. Lay down a small even bead along the entire surface and quickly smooth it out with your fingertips and install the sump.

Make sure the surfaces are squeeky clean with something like brakekleen or similar solvent. I had no issues with that method.
