More military 290GDs in Jakarta

Found this guy on one rush hour morning.
Can't figure out if this one is a 461, the instrument cluster sure looks like a 460, but the roundish tail lights are always like these on 290GDs.

I always wanted to ask why the round tail lights on the military vehicles if it looks like there is enough place for the normal ones. The round ones look odd.

id_gwagen, what do you think? I've seen at least twice G500 in the street and 1 G55 AMG in a dealer. Not sure, about Bali though.

Anyway, I acquired mine from an ex-Suharto's era General, very basic/utilitarian no A/C, power window, no diff.lock, steel wheels, and 2 long rear seat facing sideways. Previous owner, however, has added A/C and re-painted it black. Everthing else is original. I'll post pics soon!!!

Maybe the military likes to cover-up the tail lights - it's easier on a round one - so the bright brake lights are not giving away your current position.....

RE: Cheeseburger lamps

Those tail lamps are affectionately known as "cheeseburger" lamps.

They are widely used on military vehicles for commonality across the fleet. If all the different trucks in the fleet use the same tail lights, it 1) makes them more economical to purchase in quantity (read cheap) , and 2) it makes it easier for Private Smerdlap to maintain the tail lamps (read simple).

These lights were a factory option on Pinzgauers, UNIMOGs and yes, G's too. They are used on a lot of rolling stock in Europe.

Originally designed by McDonald's as a subliminal form of advertising, the lights are now found all over the world. j/k

I apologize up front if the mention of a Cheeseburger made anyone hungry, however, it is definitely better than the fish and chips tail lights used by the Brits.

The round tail-lights on the 461s also of course contain the military-spec 'blackout light' globes:

Is that your G? Why is the writing in danish(?) when the G is a RHD and in Australia? If the G came out of Graz and that is a factory option wouldn't it be in either German or English?

Terima kasih kembali => you're welcome
Haven't found that one yet, but during the previous president, I saw many times similar Gs with double doors in the back used by the 'secret service'

The only vehicles in Bali I saw were mostly motorcycles and small SUVs like the Jimnies, let alone the G500. I've seen one on at a showroom in Jakarta though.
Why the specific question in Bali, Linda?

Don't know why the instructions are in Swedish. It's definitely a vehicle built to Australian order. Perhaps Graz sourced these components from Hella Sweden?

All older military 460s bear a 461 VIN, so they are technically 461s, regardless of their year of manufacture.

And those rounbd lights are typical of many military specs Gs, such as the German Wolf.

But being a 290 GD, that G was definititely manufactured in the nineties (between 1991 and 2000).

Cheers
