RE: conversion 280 ge to 300 gd

Thanks,

I'll check it out.

Older MB diesels and parts are getting harder and harder to come by (especially here in Austin because of all the BD use and WVO conversions). I have a buddy who builds and repairs diesel 123 cars and he spent over a year looking for a crank for an OM616 (for a friend's G). You used to be able to get a clean 123 for a couple of grand, now you're lucky to find a parts car for that much. I've seen sedans and wagons on craigslist for $8K. Apparently everybody is catching on that a well-maintianed 616 or 617 will last half a million miles.

RE: conversion 280 ge to 300 gd

a question i have in mind is comparing the all round power and performance of the 280 against the 617a

is the diesel the better all-rounder?

Having run both in my G I can say they are very nearly the same but the diesel makes it's power at lower revs, and due to the turbo, holds it's performance a little better at altitude. Both are able performers in the G, and neither will tear up the road.I have a post to AMZ around here somehwere that superimposes the torque curves of 110, 617, & 617a on the same graph and you can see the relationships.-Dave G.

I have seen Warren's G many times and it is very clearly not the work of a weekend mechanic. His skill and knowledge has enabled him to produce a better than factory conversion with fewer problems and more reliability. He has really achieved excellence. When my 230ge puffs its last breath it will be turned into a 300 WT GD.
