Door skin removal?

Can someone give me a few pointers on removing our door skins, both front and rear? I've done the procedure before on numerous other vehicles but not the 463 yet.

What's a "door skin"?

If you are talking about the plastic protective sheeting behind the door panels, just try to carefully remove it and re-apply with some contact cement before re-installing. If you tear it beyond repair, get some plastic sheeting from your local hardware store and fit it in place.

RE: Door skin removal?

I believe he is talking about the sheet metal exterior panel of the door. Often these are available seperately from the door frame itself making repair a little easier and cheaper if there is no significant damage to the door frame. I was under the impression that only the whole door was available for the G. I'm not , nor ever was a body guy but it shouldn't be to difficult with the right tools to slit, grind, pop spot welds etc and remove just the skin. Not sure if this would help if you can't get a replacement.
Maybe I misunderstood and Cyntaxx means some other part of the door, but this is what I've always thought of as re-skinning a door.

I think Charles has the inner door panels in mind.

Ding ding ding! Sorry if I was inaccurate in my nomenclature - I am in fact referring to the inner door panels. I'm wanting to upgrade my speakers and perhaps apply some sound deadening in the process.

Re: Door skin removal?

On the front doors you'll have to remove a small piece of wood trim. It is snapped in place with plastic pins and easily broken. I had luck with removing it by sliding a plastic string (monofilament) behind it and gently lifting it from its mounts. Then remove the plastic frame that surrounds the door opening button by sliding it forward or back. I am not sure which direction but it should move one way or the other.
Remove the armrests by removing the plastic inserts underneath which are covering the mounting screws. When removing the stud covering the locking rod I have found it advantageous to place a short piece of vinyl tubing over the rod for re-installation.
The panels are fastened with rather sturdy pop buttons and can be removed by placing a suitable tool between panel and door and lifting gently until they are loose enough to lift the panel upward and releasing it from the window frame. It helps to have the window in the open position.
