Last summer my air was ok but never real cold... i put off having it looked at because it wasnt very hot, well this year its seem like is going to be a warm summer and my air sucks... Yesterday it ran on full with the dial on 62* both sides and it never cooled the interior down. Same thing today.. 90* out side and like 100 inside with the windows up and air one. I just drove it for 45 min and it never blows cold no matter what setting you put it on, So my question is can i use one of those recharge kits from autozone, walmart, pepboys... etc... | ||

They may add too much oil or they may not. It all depends on what has leaked out. First, of course, you will need to find and fix the leak. | ||

Kerr, I just went through the AC problem. If you look, there is a sight glass on the left facing the front of the engine compartment. If your freon is low, it will either have bubbles (Low) of no liquid (Clear) for a total loss of fluid. My problem was the coil was leaking at the bottom right. They replaced the coil and recharged it under my extended warranty. (No cost to me) You can refill it with the new freon form any auto store, but not the older type of freon. Just connect everything and start the engine. Turn the AC on and fill the system until the bubbles dissapapear in the sight glass. Do not over fill it. Turn the engine off and allow it to equalize the pressure and remove your fill attachent. If you see bubbles in a few days, get your pocket book and run for the hills. | ||

The car has been on for a hour 6 on the fan speed and both dials to 64*... The drivers side vents are blowing 100* and the passanger side vents are blowing 82*.... I thought maybe it was confused and turned to it heat just make sure it cycled threw... with the dials on90* its blowing 140* on the drivers side and 145* on the passanger side... Bottom line it HOT with black paint and seats!!! | ||

The "milk" is probably highly aerated whipped up "freon" and oil; and it is an indication of pressure loss in the system. If you want to do things right, get an A/C specialty house to work on it. It needs to be pumped down to a very hard vacuum followed by the addition back of exactly the amount of R134 as is indicated on the underhood label; and they should include a shot of leak detecting dye in the charge. Unless you have the specialized equipment and knowhow, you'll probably make it worse if you try to do it yourself. | ||

It comes with a pressure gauge that tells you the psi before and after.. Before the new freon went in it was showing 10 psi. as the bottle went in it jumped up to 50 psi which on the gauge is the "yellow" zone that says "alert" then after the bottle was empty it dropped down to 30 psi. On the gauge "full" is 30-45 psi. 45-65 is "alert" and 65-100 is "danger" The temps dropped as soon as it went in.. the air was blowing 90* and dropped to 60 with in a minute.. I bought extra small bottle 13oz as well.. I dont ever remember the air working this well... i guess this has been low from day one. | ||

Kerr, Dutch is right, you should take it to an AC shop and have them find the leak. Most mom-and-pop type places will find the leak, evacuate your system, and charge it with the correct amount of refrigerant for around $200. Then you can be sure that everything is right. Loading it yourself is fine in an emergency, but it's impossible to add the correct amount using the pressure gauge on the filler. The shop will actually weigh it. An incorrect amount could reduce the life expectancy of the compressor, and the Mercedes spec is very tight. Plus, you don't know how much lubricant you have in there. And if there's a leak, you can't be sure what's got inside. There might be water in the system. The shop will pull all that out with a vacuum. You might be OK, but if the compressor fails it will be expensive. Edited by W5YK 5/22/2007 2:16 PM | ||

I have to dissagree with the answer of taking it to a shop at first. Kerr surely has a leak, but to determine if it is a very slow leak, then I would do just as he has done, recharge it and the watch it. If it goes fast, then take it to a repair shop. | ||
