Factory bicycle rack?

OK every SINGLE time I've checked a G wagen VIN on the Russian VIN decoder, there is this little item in the list:

E51 bicycle rack, alustyle (double) (с 1978)

Does anybody have a picture of what this actually looks like? As one who will (OK often) be taking a bike with me, I want to know if this factory unit holds a modern full-suspension mountain bike.

Thanks!

Re: Factory bicycle rack?

Its not a bike rack. Its a code for something else - but what I don't remember. Hopefully Mortinson will pip in here as he knows what its for. There are a few things like that on the VIN. You will also notice that most Gs seem to have Designo leather... and rubber strip all around.

EDIT: I found mortinson's comments:

Mortinson on GWOA Forums:

E51 means "short-range interference suppression", and not "bicycle rack, alustyle (double) (с 1978)"

E43 means "trailer plug socket, thirteen-pin", and not "cassette holder (с 26.06.1997)"

U46 means "leather seat cover" and not "rub strip all-round (с 26.09.1996)"

X59 means "central locking system" and not "leather, designo-dark green, two-color (с 1978)"

The full balck leather is made up to two codes, U46 (leather) and V18 (interior in black)

But now the question is what is "short-range interfderence suppression"?

Re: Factory bicycle rack?

I don't konw about that rack, but Hollywood Racks used to make a spare tire rack that works wonderfully, i'm so pleased with mine i had it modified to accomodate my 33" tire now on the back. While most spare tire racks if you can find them anymore list "not for off road use" where as the hollywood rack simply suggested careful use offroad. With a little creativity it'll hold most any bike. Since it's already gone under the knife to fit my 33's i've also got a few more ideas to make it even easier to hold the bike on the back and still allow opening and closing of the door... If they can't dig one up, maybe they'll give you the plans to have one fabbed... (holds 2 bikes)

RE: Factory bicycle rack?

Thanks you guys!

Maxwell, I appreciate the info, especially that there is no bicycle rack. Curious that the codes say that. I could use a bit more "short range interference suppression" whatever that is!

Also ewalberg - Thanks for the tip on the Hollywood. there's a local shop that sells them, I'll look into it. Roof mounting is difficult, then you kill your bike when you pull in the garage (happened to a friend of mine) I have been using a receiver hitch mounted rack for a while, but I noticed most G's don't have the receiver type of hitch.

It is probably electronic filtering to prevent engine ignition noise from causing static on your AM radio. It was an extra cost option on my 1984 280GE.

RE: Factory bicycle rack?

Mine has also the short range interference surpressing (SA E51).
As far as I could find out this mainly consists of a set of braided copper cables. Almost everything is connected with an extra cable to "earth".
I have seen this several times on the 460 models for the BGS or army if they had the mounting for the short wave radio.
The picture shows only two cables, but I think there are about ten or twelve of them

Re: Factory bicycle rack?

Woody, 463's do have the receiver hitch. My 460 has a hitch that I modified to make it a receiver style. It is easy to do and strong as hell. I know what you mean about roof racks. I know a couple of people who forgot they were up there and customized the bikes in a rather odd way. The receiver style is not without risk but easier than the roof of the G.

I also modified my hitch to the receiver type. I can post pics if interested.
