RFC -- Is it a good buy? '79 G Diesel

I found this posting on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=30011...

Does any one know anything about this '79 G Diesel? Are the leather seats for real? What about
registering this in California? What is a good price for this?

Perfect G Diesel I am looking for -- LWB, Diesel, manual trans ... VIN 4603331703183

Thanks

looks in nice shape... after market sunroof is not desirable... the leather seats are from another vehicle... nice but also not desirable to G purists... price seems high already...

I would HIGHLY recommend getting an older G in cali... importing that will expensive and getting it registered here in CA is very sketchy... a huge hassle at a minimum...

I recently bought a registered 79 G diesel here in CA... took me nearly 2 years of waiting... there were a few available in that time though... just not the right one for me...

I would pass on that one... if you are brave enough to import one look at the german ebay... nice ones priced right on the all the time.

Thanks jcane ... for your input. The paint looks too nice & low mileage that I think the car was hacked together.
What price would you settle for this G?

Which model years can I import to California? for diesel?

Looks like Volvo front and rear seats. They are definately not original G seats. Not a big deal just curious to see how/if rear seats still fold down.

RE: RFC -- Is it a good buy? '79 G Diesel

The seats are from an Audi, probably an older 100 series. I'd venture to say that this particular truck has at least 188K Km and more likely 288K KM or more by the amount of grease around the valve cover and all over the P/S pump, and all of the grease on the rear diff, at any rate it is way more than 88K. Notice that there are no rub strips on the upper body... so it has been re painted and had body work done to cover the holes where the strips would have mounted. I'd be willing to say that it probably has a lot of body filler in it, but that is just speculation, I haven't seen the truck in person before, but it is funny that there are no close up pictures of normal rust spots .

At any rate I'd want to see it in person before I even concidered making a bid on it, especially at it's current price.

Cheers,
Ben

I've seen this truck before, about 3 years ago when I was first REALLY looking for a G. This truck has had alot of work done on it since I last saw it. If I remember correctly, it had a fair amount of rust.

VIN is not listed correctly in the ad.  Needs to be 14 digits.  I asked the seller to clarify on E-bay.

jcaine - 5/23/2007 1:11 AM if you are brave enough to import one look at the german ebay... nice ones priced right on the all the time.

Or look at www.mobile.de  Other than that, keep looking at www.clubgwagen.com from time to time.  Or you could call Europa, Eurotruck Importers, or Keiser Motors to see if anything you like is coming.  At least this will save you from import costs and the other hassles.
