Should I run?

OK, sorry to lean on you guys so much for this prospective 463 purchase, but I'm getting scared as my beautiful 460 is about to not be mine any more and I wont find something as nice w/o spending way more money than I can afford.

So here's the deal should I be scared of a 2000 463 located in Ohio where it has been all it's life on salty winter roads? The owner says she has it detailed 4 times a year, and it does look like it too. BUT, there is small amounts of surface rust bearing its ugly head in the front bumper, bottom of rear door and under one of the outside door handels, and down on the rear corner of the running boards closest to the cab. I'm waiting for more detailed photos. There is also surface rust underneath the car on edges of things and exhaust and some bolt heads I can barely make out in pictures. This totaly sucks, because I'm ready to buy it for every other reason, but I'm from the desert and my definition of rust free is not the same as someone from Ohio. Does anyone live near Cleveland? I would be foreever in debt to you if someone could give me a third party opinion. Am I crazy to concider this, otherwise very clean and well kept G? Do you think a can or two of rust inhibitor and spending the rest of it's life (hopefully) here in the dry lands of New Mexico will curb any future deadly cancer? -James

RE: Should I run?

If I had those kinds of doubts, I would personally inspect it before finalizing the sale.

RE: Should I run?

I've lived in AZ for nearly 50 years. My experience is that once a car starts to rust, even if it is transplanted to a dry climate, the rusting process is hard to completely stop.

RE: Should I run?

James, I took five months to find the right G. I believe when you are patient, the right thing will come along. If I am not taking away your only daily driver, I think you should wait.

I'm from Philly originally... PA, next state over and user of salt... it's BAD... rots the sh#* out of everything... detailing is great but that doesn't deal with the underside, nooks, etc... if you don't like rust (like me) I'd follow Dutch's advice... check it out first. It's worth the plane fair.

Re: Should I run?

The Midwest is known as the rust-belt for good reason. Typically, most 2000 cars aren't a concern, but the I'm still shocked every so-often how a relatively new GALVANIZED car is a rust bucket. Also - as much as we all love the G and would like to believe they were all built by mythical perfect-10 blonds that never make a mistake - the build CONSISTENCY on these trucks varies greatly, ranging from 60s-early 80s MB quality to crap. Inspection is the only way to tell.

RE: Should I run?

i think you should worry about electrics and mechanical issues rather than body work.thats my personal opinion.price ofcourse being the main issue.rust is sometimes inevitable but there are lots of companies selling products like POR15 etc. i think you can stay on top of rust if you keep it under control.
i had minor rust issues on my 280GEL but it seems ok now,my friend shakir also major problems but had the whole vehicle sprayed in cyprus during one of his travels there.

inspect the G close up to see the extent and then decide.

good luck.

RE: Should I run?

2000 G's don't come around that often. Catch a cheap flight and check it out! I waited 6 months for mine hopped on the cheapest flight to New York to preview. Money well spent. Over the number of years you will own this new G spending $200-$300 on a plane ticket will seem like nothing.

RE: Should I run?

Thanks for the words of reason guys. And after I saw these photos......I'm definatley running!!!
James, thanks for the find on the other 2000 over on BW, Ill check it out. As far sa the 2000 in N.C., he still wants too much and it is the older steering wheel and cluster, he won't go under $30. The hunt goes on.
