Cabrio on Ebay

I notice this listing on ebay today and I was just wondering if any members that maybe in the area may know or have seen it in person? Would be a fun summer vehicle for me but I am not in the area. Anyways here is the listing. http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150128955929

RE: Cabrio on Ebay

Chris,

On June 1, 2007, a 1985 Mercedes Benz 280GE Cabrio (GAS) on ebay closed at auction for $20,0000 dollars.

Link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Benz-G-Class-280GE-Ultra-Ra...

Based on the above recent history, I believe that this 1980 Mercedes Benz 240G Diesel Cabrio will close at auction on ebay for over $25,000 to $30,000 dollars.

"Supply and Demand"

Respectfully,

James Van Thach

RE: Cabrio on Ebay

Looks like a very clean vehicle, though it has had many changes.

Total repaint obviously (looks like it was originally black) (they even painted the round air inlets on the dash),

It has a 240D engine from a sedan (wonder why they replaced it?), Now they could have just replaced the air cleaner housing in favor of a sedans, just not sure. In the article it mentions the 617 diesel engine but that would be a 5 cylinder diesel the 240 is a 4,

Windshield washer is aftermarket (large hole in bottom left corner of fender in engine photo).

With the repaint you want to make sure the that they addressed the rust issue if there was any and make sure the did not just mask it.

The 240GD is a slow vehicle but this one with the convertible top would be a fun one as long as you are not in a hurry.

If you are serious about it take a cheap flight, fly down to see it. Also ask him if he has a buy it now price that would end the auction early.

Also research the VIN # to find out how it was originally configured. Ask him for the complete VIN # as the one listed is incomplete.

Good Luck
Mark

RE: Cabrio on Ebay

Another question to ask would be: Why does a seller in Harrisburg, PA USA list on Ebay Canada and not on Ebay USA?!??

He also mangles the history of the G in the US, including some over inflated price numbers; and his description of highway acceleration and driving speed are pure wishful hallucination.

RE: Cabrio on Ebay

If in Pennsylvania, why isn't there an inspection sticker on the windshield?

If antique registered, why not show the plate? Also, if antique registered, only extremely limited use.

1980 Mercedes Benz 240G Diesel Cabrio possible rust bubbles

Gwagen forum,

It looks like there are possible rust bubbles on the rear of the 1980 Mercedes Benz 240G Diesel Cabrio.

Respectfully,

RE: Cabrio on Ebay

The paint may be bright yellow but anyone who would paint over door latches and air vents etc.. obviously has skipped a few fundemental steps along the way. I wonder how the body work was done under all that Tonka paint???

Here's an interesting article that concerns the seller:

http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2006/01/01-11-06tdc/01-11-06dn...

The State of Pennsylvania website does not turn up a Law License for him either, which may explain why he's now selling used cars on Ebay.

Have I mentioned before about the similarities in the words "lawyer" and "liar."

Anyways on another note that kind of related back to the G, particularly the color and model: Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed there seem to be a few yellow G Cabrios up for sale? I saw one on Norm's website. I see one in the Europa website. Now, I see this one. Is a yellow G Cabrio suppose to be the next in style thing? Or the other way around; is it something going out of style. Afterall and for some reason, I think of shortbus when I see Gs in this color.

This liar, I mean lawyer, must have rode the shortbus.

Re: Cabrio on Ebay

And this just in from Guido himself (I had contacted him to learn the steps of importing my 1982 project G - anyone out there that can provide some help in this please send me a note):

"Hi paul , i have no website till now because i am alone working person till now ….

I learned to know gary by a ebay deal and he said he will come to germany because he won an auction of an old convertible G class .

He came over and saw a totally rusty car , phoned me by cell phone and viseted me and we both tried a hard way to export an old vehicle .

German and US documents and cumstoms works are so difficult that we both worked it out for several months . now we know how it works ….

But gary needs me and me gary , i think it is near to impossible to make it alone , you always need a person on the other side for telephone calls , instructions and fast and correct payments

Gary and me trust us blind , that ist he most important , we didn`t look at the money and how much hours we spent to export the car to the US . gary is a loyal person and able to work out the plans , i am more the mechanic , check the complete german market and check out which car is good for the united states .

Here is a link to my ebay listing , my nickname is industrytools24 . http://search.ebay.de/_W0QQsassZindustrytools24QQhtZ-1
And now happy bidding on a nice antic vehicle , guido"

Who knows maybe Guido did a good job on the 'totally rusty' car.

RE: Cabrio on Ebay

FWIW, I have purchased small item from Guido (industrytools) and found him to be honest and good followup on transaction through email communication, as he even refunded part of my paypal payment as shipping was less than he had originally quoted in item description. He seem to always have some oddball G stuff for sale. I have also seen some familiar names listed on his feedback.

Oddly enough - Guido is also the guy who is selling the GELÄNDEWAGEN NORTH AMERICA badge for €120. Not that that is a statement on his character - just an interesting fact.

I would presume that Gary (and here we all are assuming he is a sleeze ball when he could in fact be a very nice and honest person) would need to keep a good relationship with Guido so from Guido's point of view he would be an honest and straight forward character...

But presumably Guido will help anybody import a car....

Ok. here are my 4 cents....

Guido is a very nice man, and a very honest one too!
He has ton's of G-stuff in his basement, some real interesting thing other are a bit odd. He changed his ebay-hobby site into a commercial entity (industrytools) with all the proper German documentations (not easy to do!). So his pricing has changed and depends how rare the part is, that's how much he's asking.

You don't need to buy anything from him if you do not like his pricing!

I visited him at his house last year and bought a few well received items - YES, Hipine's map lite came out of his friendly hands!
He even shipped some of my ebay-loot (not purchased from him) to my freight consolidator.

I do value his friendship and can recommend him as a excellent and honest German ebay source, which accepts Paypal (yes) and will ship to the US.

Thank you guys,

Karl
