Pete stated that he is getting 100 kw out of his new engine (with 31" tires mounted) - if he goes to 35" tires he will lose 15% = 15 kw



This engine use to give 130KW in the G320.Whats is wrong in his configuration?

since kw and HP are derived from torque, he will have the same amount of kw in low range (any gear).
Yes, he will have 2.14 times more torque (torque times rpm etc) - but at 2.14 times less rpm (at the wheel) which leaves kw untouched.
Kw and HP are useless anyway because they only depict the amount of work that can be done - not the force moving your truck.
It like some guys in the office - they move around fast, demonstrating they work a lot, but they don't have the force to move anything.
I'll alway prefer a high torque, lower rpm engine any time over a medium torque, high rpm engine - with that set up they will both have about the same kw/HP. Same thing in the office - I like the quiet guys that get things done much better than the hectic, "all over the place" guys.

KW is the tax of work production. Talking about wheel , engines , etc...the torque in the axel will be the engine torque multiplicated by the crawl ratio (4,6x 2,14x 5,2) in an original G230.

So the torque sent to the wheels axel contact is 300x51.18= 15.356

In wich wheel 3840 N.M in that case .(15356/4 =3840n.m)

But the force that make our trucks go on depends of the wheel diameter : T = F D/2 ( F is the ground resistance or the traction). Talking about a plane and resistent street.

So if you increase the wheel diameter , and axel and wheel rotates at same speed because they are connected you will have reduced the traction on the ground in the same tax .

So from 31 to 35 you increased D/2 in 13%. So you must lose 13% of force on the ground. If not your axel will loose wheel contact.


All is very detaild in Harald works in 101 4wd.

Boewick we still have to set up the cam advance and the butterfly in the intake manifold. The fitment of an aftermarket engine management system has meant we have to do things in stages (long story short conversion happened 1400km away and I needed the truck down here fast so some things had to wait). I will let you know when these are connnected and all is running well what the figures are. Pete

Hi G wizz. Yes, I am very aware of what I am up against and we are not taking this lightly. There is a core group of South Africans that have been participating in the Outback Challenge for the last 4 or 5 years and the best they have managed is 12th, which is fantastic but, these are folks who have a lot more experience then me in competition and they have well built vehicles that are honed on the local challenge series. So there it is. But having said that I know I have an excellent vehicle, that will be well prepared and a team mate that is bullet proof and an attitude that will see us through. Also, having grown up in the bush and been driving 4x4's since just after I could walk means I have a good basic knowledge.

I believe that we have a good chance of raising some eyebrows and surprising some folks. Watch this space!

Hi Harald,

Its done by the folks who dyno tune the vehicle. The instrument measures kw at the wheels and there is a formula they use to revert it back to the flywheel. The 100kw I am getting is at the wheel.
