VCR Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | 280GE Information request 280GE Information request I had give-up already the idea of getting a G model because its was impossible for me to get the one, and suddenly I have the possibility to get a long 280GE from 1983. All my research went to the diesel model because of the prohibitive price of gasoline so I don’t have specify knowledge of this model. Are there any specific problems? Can it be converted to LPG? (I wonted a diesel to run on SVO but if it runs LPG its ok for me) Ill see if I can get the VIN Thanks in advance, Vasco

VCR Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: 280GE Information request I can but for a 20 year old 3000 diesel G I would have to pay around 6000€ in tax. And whit the new eco tax that starts in the end of this month people are saying it Ill cost 15000€ to import plus 500€ every year of road tax. This makes it very expensive to import and the few whit Portuguese plates are very over priced. Unfortunately I can’t afford it :-(

Eg (Poland) it is half the price of gasoline (petrol) but your G will burn 50% more taking some light offroad into account (in 280GE 30l/100km instead of 20 petrol). For simplicity let's assume gas is 1 euro/l and LPG 50 cents (really 95 petrol is 1.20 here) . 1000km with petrol will cost you 200 euro and 150 euro with LPG. You will save the cost of your LPG installation (1000 euro) after 20,000 km. After another 20,000 km you better have some money saved for the engine overhaul. Other issues notwithstanding. Do the figures for your market and see if it is really worth it.

I have done the account, gasoline is also 2 times the price of GPL in Portugal, my first choice would be a 300GD

Disco 2 Posts: 4398 | RE: 280GE Information request I have carried out several LPG conversions on 280s and have been dissapopinted. The 280 GE is a low compression engine, when converted to LPG you will loose a lot of power as the calorific value of LPG is a lot lower than gasoline. the Jetronic injector system can not be fully isolated a shunt has to be put in to the pump, this is not entirley successful as the capiliary action of the injection system coupled with the pressure retained in the fuel regulator causes mixtures to change and induces a lot of back firing. Conclusion: the 280 GE is not an ideal engine to gas.

In fact it's a mixture propane-butane. Not to confuse with CNG=compressed natural gas (methane).

vantunes Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: 280GE Information request I have a 230GE with k-jectronic injection so i have the same problems that you have with the 280GE. My is running in LPG for 5 years and til now i only have 2 times back fire on the engine. Have a lot more back fire on a BMW 520I. This car has now 292.000 Kms and has LPG for more than 92.000 km and still going strong as ever. Most of the problems with engine reliability running LPG has to do with lean mixtures that some installer tend do do.
