Replacement of bearing on rear diff

Hi Guys

I've noticed that the rear drum on my 460 was leaking fluid so on Saturday I opened up to quickly sort out the leak on my brakes (I thought). It turns out that the seals on the right rear bearings has gone.

I've tried to run a search on this forum, but most of the things relate to front bearings. What advise do you guys have for me in doing this job. My friends in South Africa tells me that I need to buy a complete kit to fix the problem. There also seems to be some pressing off of things etc.

Any advise on how to handle this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Arnold

RE: Replacement of bearing on rear diff

You are correct , you cannot buy the seal seperately from Mercedes Benz. There is not even a part no for it. You can buy a SKF kit part no VKBA 1470 from http://www.speed-autoteile.com for Euro 62.25. I bought a set from them and the landed price was R743 incl VAT . This item was rated at 0% import duty.

Unfortunately you will have to go this way and might as well change the wheel bearing.

I'm not sure - but does this kit include the bearing?

RE: Replacement of bearing on rear diff

BTW you G was ordered in 1990 , so its either a 1990 or 1991 model year.

The dealer code computes to "humanitarian societies, export" . Was this one of those UN Vehicles that went to Namibia?

The bearing is the part in the greasy bag to the furthest right in the photo.

Re: Replacement of bearing on rear diff

I replaced my rear bearings with the MB repair kits # 601 350 0468. They come with complete kit same as SKF shown by peter

Re: Replacement of bearing on rear diff

Yes it does
Its a TIMKEN U460L097 made in BRazil! Are Timken and SKF part of the same group?
The SKF kit seal however does not include the cellulose seal as the Merc one does - see the yellow seal in above picture.
