Making Money at BW

Has anyone noticed the new popup ads that appear above the many linked words in messages and elsewhere on the BW forums? The word can be a city, an item, a car, lots of things. If you hover your mouse over the linked word, you'll see what I mean. Noting wrong with making a profit, but the enthusiast spirit sure seems to be gone over there.

yup, it has happened to a lot of forums. Not only MB. But Lexus, BMW, etc.

Very sad. Such nice forums ruined all for money.

In addition to it being annoying it makes it harder to read the post.

I'm pretty sure they are all operated by the same "Vortex" bunch.

I was on ClubLexus and there were instructions on how to get rid of them. But I don't think it's the same advertising company(?) that they use on BW.

I agree, and most of the time information presented in the pop-up is wrong or useless.....

RE: Making Money at BW

As a marketing student I find it interesting but I think it is a bit like popups people hate them and just work out a way to get rid of them but in this case we can't. The worst part is that most of the stuff is of no use to Mercedes owners and they even have an ad in my profile information under the location New Zealand for holidays etc. That I find disgusting, I did not give any consent. I would have less of a problem if I could use any of the bloody things, but I can't I have no interest in any of that stuff. Talk about getting the target consumer group wrong. This is like selling bubble gum in the lockjaw ward.

My guess is the legal eagles would say you gave your consent by joining/posting or that anything posted on BW is the property of BW to do with as they see fit.

I don’t have a problem with a web site making a buck and if we were to come to BW new we might not think much of it.

RE: Making Money at BW

Personally, i find the increasing commercialization of the BW forums distasteful. It has even become a distraction, as most forums have several threads these new "features" as they begin to appear and cause confusion. The most recent of these was the "forum network" drop-downs at the top of every page.

Now, if PT could get it's email notifications working properly I'd hang up my hat at BW and put those pop-ups, banners, and who knows what's coming behind me. :

The blonde dating ad is not in the least car related! That was the shocker. They must be broke!

Yeah, I saw another reference to it and added it to my list of SLK links. My only problem now is finding time to log into all of the variety of sites on a regular basis.
