The word of the day is... Variety. Their plan is to have something for everyone. Thats why msot of their cars eclipse each other in price range. They figure that most people have their heart set on a certain style car so cross-shopping models of the same brand shouldn't happen too often. This is how MB justifies having 1000 different models.
MB covers:
Entry class (A)
Slightly larger entry class (B)
Entry luxo-sport sedan (C)
Luxo-sport sedan (E)
Luxury Sedan (S)
Sports Car (SLK)
Luxury Sports car (SL)
4 passenger Convertible (CLK)
Two door Hyper Luxury sedan (CL)
SUV (ML)
Military SUV (G)
Off Road SUV (GL)
Smaller SUV (GLK)
Commercial Trucks (not sold at local dealerships)
Supercar (SLR)
Then they go and invent/reinvent classes to make people buy things that they didnt even think they needed:
Super trendy sedan coupe thingy (CLS)
Minivan/Large B Class/Really big stationwagon thingy (R Class)

The CLS is a huge success for MB. That should stay. There are a few Classes up there that shouldn't be there, but I won't name them.

RE: Benz Classifications

I think it's already official that the smaller SUV is called the MLK instead of the GLK.

Then you'll love this: there should only be the E and S Class sedans and the SL.

Re: Benz Classifications

JDC is taking it a step too far, but I agree with where he is going.

The CLK should still be called an E350 coupé/ cabriolet, the CL should be called an S550 coupé etc etc.

They *don't* need a 3 SUV line-up and the E-Class could be brought down a notch in regards to the drivetrain as it was prior to the inception of the C-Class(E250, starting at around $35,000)

The A, B, GL, MLK and R don't make a lot of sense for a niche carmaker-- Why would a carmaker with an already small audience try to make a complete(overtly so, even) line of cars in the first place?

I agree with you totally Neon... and in answer to your last question, I think the marketers saw the opportunity to leverage the brand which (in theory) would mean more PROFITS...

With ‘Dr. Z’ extolling the virtues of the Jeep to school children it is all hopeless and pointless.

I agree E, S, SL, got to have the original G and the classic CL... Concentrate on making them good and bam you will have the brand image that they had 10 years ago and be #1 in quality. They make to many cars and each one is different and complicated and the poor techs have a heck of a time learning how to work on them and when they finally master them they change them.

The thing I don't like about the commercials is that it all talks about how the merger has helped Chrysler and they say things like ESP, that we invented, however Mercedes invented it.

OK - DaimlerChrysler:

All one company, right? Then sell your entry and lower mid level cars as Chrysler and the E, S, and SL only as MB and you've got it all covered.

RE: Benz Classifications

I completely disagree with jdc1244, I think that would harm the brand more then help it. As for the vehicle line up I think the C class should stay, they made the 190E class and its owners are still loving it, so being an entry model isn't its problem. As for the ML, I think it should stay as it will hopefully keep bringing new technology to the SUV world and there are those who need one, as in the mountains (ok, a W221 4Matic would be my choice, but pricy). The GL slaps every American full sized SUV in the face with the fact that it makes as much power with a 4.6L as they do with a 5.3L-6.0L. As for the R and MLK, i agree that they are unnecessary.

Re: Benz Classifications

"Off Road SUV (GL)"
Um no, that would be a (G-extreme offroading) or (ML-raceing offroading) rather than a GL, the Gl is liek a suburban to carry around like a huge family.

But i agre all mercedes would need for SUV thing is the (G) but then again its really expensive to buy new.

Also the R is liek a van.
